Lamentations

“Lamentations spring only from the constant craving to re-open the wound.” – in the end of the Lent, we Christians lament the death of the son of God, he who died for the forgiveness of our sins. After three silent Lents, we re-open our wounds once again and let our souls be healed by God through faith.

Philippines – a country of mostly Christians – always makes sure it does not miss out on such a significant religious observance and near the end of Lent, it celebrates with full humility, the Holy Week. Being a week of lamentations, what does it have for me this year to lament on?

It starts with Palm Sunday, celebrating the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, where He was greeted by a crowd waving palm fronds. It was a silent day for me, nothing much happened, my family isn’t really much religious. Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, and Holy Wednesday passes by silently as I enjoy my time with friends, family, and my favorite person. And Maundy Thursday comes, where we celebrate the Last Supper of Jesus with the Apostles. We attended a mass at this day, and at Good Friday and Black Saturday. The last day of the Paschal Triduum is welcomed, the Easter Sunday, where we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the start of new life.

When we think of it, the values and the morals we learn from the observation of Holy Week are what we can apply to find peace in life. In this religious observance, we learn that there is new life after suffering; there is happiness after pain. Like what Jesus did to us, forgiving those who wronged us frees the caged pain in our hearts. And as we can see from what had happened to Jesus; as long as we have faith for the good that comes ahead, our suffering will end and will turn to happiness.

Holy Week has been a part of our lives as Christians since time immemorial. It teaches us humble beings of God the values and morals to find peace in life. It may not have been an eventful Holy Week for me, but it has given me a chance to learn and strengthen my faith to God. Monday comes and a week of lamentations end with the celebration of new life.

Let’s continue having faith on Him! 🦖
